Rogue Builds for Mists of Pandaria, 5.4

RogueBuilds.com is a site that lists different talent builds for rogues of World of Warcraft.

Finding the right rogue build that has been tested and works can save you a lot of gold and time. I also made this site to teach players the basics of how to play a rogue.

Information comes from many sources: forums, wowwiki, icy-veins, shadowpanther, etc. I hope you find the following builds and information useful.

Mists of Pandaria is upon us. This means the entire talent system was changed. At level 90 you will have 6 tiers of talents to choose from, each tier has 3 talents, you can have one talent from each tier. In all honesty I do not like the new talent system as much as the old one but I will not go on about that, I have to embrace it I guess :)

Besides the new talent system they have removed one of tiers of glyphs, added battle pets, added 5 levels, added the Pandaren Race, lots and lots more content.

Patch 5.4 was released, the following are changes that effect rogues:

General

Ambush damage has been increased by 12%.
Evasion now increases dodge chance by 100% (was 50%), cooldown has been reduced to 2 minutes (down from 3 minutes), and duration has been reduced to 10 seconds (down from 15 seconds).
Eviscerate now deals 10% less damage.
Fan of Knives damage has been increased by 25%.
Recuperate now restores 4% of maximum health every 3 seconds, up from 3%.
Sinister Strike deals an increased 240% of weapon damage (up from 145%), but now costs 50 Energy (up from 40 Energy).

Assassination

Assassination Rogues should no longer be eligible for any other weapon types except daggers in situations where loot is automatically awarded(Raid Finder, Bonus Roll, Heroic/Normal Scenarios, and the upcoming Flexible Raid difficulty.)
Dispatch now deals 645% weapon damage (up from 460%).
Mutilate now deals 280% weapon damage (up from 200%).

Combat

  • New passive ability, Ruthlessness: This passive ability is learned by Combat Rogues at Level 32. The Rogue gains a 20% chance per combo point (100% chance at 5 combo points) to immediately regain 1 combo point while performing a finishing move.
  • Killing Spree targeting has been changed. If Blade Flurry is not active, Killing Spree will now hit the Rogue's target 7 times or pick the closest eligible target if none had been selected. Killing Spree will continue to work as it has while Blade Flurry is active.
Revealing Strike now deals 160% weapons damage (up from 125%).
Vitality now increases Attack Power by 40% (up from 30%).
Fixed an issue where certain conditions can cause Blade Flurry to not deal damage to additional nearby opponents.

Subtlety

  • Backstab now deals 380% weapon damage (up from 275%).
  • Hemorrhage now deals 160% weapons damage (up from 140%); 232% weapons damage if a dagger is equipped (up from 203% for daggers).
  • Sanguinary Vein now increases damage against targets with bleed effects by 25% (up from 20%).

Talents

  • Burst of Speed cost has been reduced to 15 Energy (down from 30 Energy).
  • Cheat Death now reduces damage taken by 85% after activating (up from 80%).
  • Cloak and Dagger now allows the Rogue to use Ambush, Garrote, and Cheap Shot from 40 yards away (up from 30 yards).
  • Nightstalker now increases damage dealt by abilities while stealthed by 50%, up from 25%.
  • Paralytic Poison now stuns the target at 4 applications of the poison (down from 5 applications).
  • Shadowstep now has a reduced cooldown of 20 seconds (down from 24 seconds).

Glyphs

  • Major Glyphs
    • Glyph of Adrenaline Rush's effect is now baseline and has been replaced with Glyph of Redirect.
      • Glyph of Redirect now reduces the cooldown of Redirect by 50 seconds (down from Redirect no longer has a cooldown).
    • Glyph of Blind now only removes damage-over-time effects that would cause Blind to break. For Rogues that also have the Dirty Tricks talent, this means Blind will no longer remove the Rogue’s poison or bleed effects.
    • Glyph of Crippling Poison has been replaced with Glyph of Sharpened Knives.
      • Glyph of Sharpened Knives now causes Fan of Knives to also damage the armor of its victims, applying 1 application of the Weakened Armor effect to each target.
    • Glyph of Debilitation has been replaced with Glyph of Recovery.
      • Glyph of Recovery increases the healing received by the Rogue while Recuperate is active.
    • Glyph of Recuperate now increases the healing of Recuperate by an additional 1% (up from 0.5%).
    • Glyph of Sap has been replaced with Glyph of Hemorrhaging Veins.
      • Glyph of Hemorrhaging Veins causes Sanguinary Veins ability to also increase damage done to targets affected by Hemorrhage.
    • Glyph of Shiv now reduces the cooldown of Shiv by 3 seconds (was 2 seconds).

  • New Minor Glyphs
    • Glyph of Improved Distraction: Distract now summons a decoy at the target location.
    • Glyph of the Headhunter: Throw and Deadly Throw abilities will now throw axes regardless of the Rogue's currently equipped weapon.

Class Armor

  • Rogue Tier-15 4-piece set bonus now causes Shadow Blades to reduce the cost of all abilities by 15% (down from 40%).

Assassination Builds, Updated For 5.4

  • 1 - Raid Assassination Rogue Build 5.4 - Top assassination build. This build is a very high dps build for raids. Depending on the fight you will want to change your talents depending on the mechanics of the encounter. For instance: In fights where you can stay on the boss the whole time and don't have to move Preparation is better than Shadowstep as it will allow you to get a free mutilate, otherwise Shadowstep will be a much better option as it will allow you to get back on the boss faster (as getting back in position faster means more DPS).
  • rogue assassination raid build

    Single Target Assassination Rotation:

Always start attack when possible in stealth with an assassination spec and use mutilate as your opener as Shadow Focus will make this a free attack. Slice and Dice, then Mutilate till you have 5 combo points and then Rupture. Repeat but use Envenom as finisher unless Rupture is about to fall off, keep up Slice and Dice.

When target is below 35% health or when blindside procs use Dispatch. Make sure your combos are 5 point combos at this point with Rupture and Envenom.

    Multi Target Combat Rogue Rotation:

If you are going against 6 or more enemies you should use Fan of Knives and Crimson Tempest when you have 5 combo points accumulated.

    Poisons:

Deadly Poison and Leeching Poison or Instant Poison. Deadly poison should always be on and the other poison you use will depend on if a DPS boost or survivability is more important. If you are not using Leeching Poison, Cheat Death will be the talent of choice.

    Combat Builds, Updated For 5.4

  • 1 - Raid PVE Rogue Combat Build for 5.4 - This is the default combat rogue raiding dps build the build. Depending on the fight you will want to change your talents depending on the mechanics of the encounter. For instance: In fights where you can stay on the boss the whole time and don't have to move Preparation is better than Shadowstep as it will allow you to get more ambushes, otherwise Shadowstep will be a much better option as it will allow you to get back behind a boss much faster if you have had to leave him during an encounter and the cooldown is low. Getting back in position faster means more DPS.
  • combat rogue build 5.0.5

Single Target Combat Rogue Rotation 5.4:

Ambush - Use whenever you can (whenever you come out of stealth)

Revealing Strike - Make sure this is always on target as it increases damage on finishing moves and increases chances of Sinister Strike giving you bonus combo points.

Sinister Strike - This is your main attack, you will be using this to build combo points whenever you are not doing other things.

Slice and Dice - This increases your attack speed, make sure you always have this buff up at all times but don't waste combo points recasting it if it still has a lot of time left on it.

Rupture - A 5 combo point rupture should be maintained on target. This is a strong DoT that should always be maintained.

    Multi Target Combat Rogue Rotation:

If you are attacking 2 or more targets make sure you have Blade Flurry turned on so you can hit an additional target but be sure to turn it off when you are on just a single target.

    Subtlety Builds, Updated For 5.4

  • 1 - Subtlety PVE Talent Build - This is the top subtlety build for rogues in Mists of Pandaria.
  • subtlet pve build

    Subtlety Single Target Rotation:

Ambush - Use this as your attack whenever you are exiting stealth.

Slice and Dice - Maintain this on target for attack speed boost and for energy regeneration rate increase it provides. Preferably do this with 5 combo points just as it is about to drop off but it can be done initially with less combo points at the beginning of combat.

Hemorrhage - Use to have a bleed effect on target, recast if it is about to fall off. If you cannot be behind your target so you can Backstab it then Hemorrhage is also your combo point builder.

Backstab - If you can be behind your target this is the main combo point generation skill you will use as Subtlety spec'd.

Rupture - Maintain a 5 point Rupture on target.

Eviscerate - If Rupture or Slice and Dicer are not about to expire use this finishing move with 5 points on target.

    Multi Target Rotation:

If you are going against 6 or more enemies you should use Fan of Knives and Crimson Tempest when you have 5 combo points accumulated.

    Rogue Leveling Build:

Usually I recommend using a combat build for leveling. Why use a combat build for leveling a rogue? Well combat builds concentrate on fast attacks and have the option of being able to hit 2 targets at once, this allows you to power threw small groups of mobs faster, allowing you to level faster. This combat rogue leveling build should be a good one to use while leveling as it has a good mix of survivability and damage skills to help you level fast.

    Talents of the build include:

    • Nightstalker
    • Nerve Strike
    • Leeching Poison
    • Preparation
    • Prey on the Weak
    • Anticipation

    Major Glyphs:

    • Adrenaline Rush
    • Cloak of Shadows
    • Evasion

    Minor Glyphs:

    • Safe Fall
    • Killing Spree
    • Pick Pocket

Basically the meat of this build is combat and it is setup to burn down mobs fast, this is a well rounded combat leveling build.

Assassination builds are almost as good combat builds for leveling. Assassins receive a bonus for using daggers making them a stronger choice when leveling in most cases by a marginal amount. Mutilate is a strong main attack that strikes with both of your main hands at once for a large amount of damage but due to it costing 60 energy you will not be able to use your main attack as often.

    How to Play a Rogue.

Learning how to play a rogue is a bit easier than it is to master most classes as we do not use a lot of skills compared to some.

The main things you should know as a rogue is:

  • What rogue build to use.
  • What gear to wear.
  • How to gem and reforge your gear.
  • What rotations to use to do the most damage.
  • What skills to use to do the most damage.
  • What poisons to use and when not to poison.
  •

    1. What tree and build should I use - Talents and specialization will vary. Combat is the best to level with but for raids it will vary due to the boss and the mechanics of the fight.

    2. Rogue Gear - Rogue gear is a part of how much damage you can do. I recommend using Shadow Panther as this is a very good site for ranking rogue gear and lists stats and a link of where the gear comes from. There is a big difference on the gear you want for PVP or for PVE. The stats you want on your gear varies depending on the type of build. Also do not forget to reforge gear and gem to make sure you are getting to your hit caps, exp caps and so forth then focus in on what is important to the build/tree you are using.

    3. Combat Rotations - What a rotation is is basically the order you cast your spells/skills in, usually they are priority driven as proc's usually make it so you can't just cast X sinister strikes, before hitting rupture for instance. A rotation is continuously repeated throughout a fight and will help maximize DPS. Face rolling buttons will not max your DPS, unless you are a very, very bad player :)

    4. Skills - Rupture is the best finishing move that can be used on most bosses or mobs that take a long time to die. The key is to not use rupture over and over again though, only reapply at 5 points if it is about to fall off. Exceptions are if the boss/mob is immune to rupture or if the mob will die before a rupture can go through its full set of ticks.

Revealing Strike is one of the new skills that was just added in 4.0.1 and it makes your next finishing move hit hard, this is a good skill to use when you have 4 combo points as using this skill adds another combo point to the target and you can immediately follow it up by a finishing move.

On mobs/bosses where you have to interrupt spells/abilities make sure you save enough energy to kick, kidney shot or gouge.

Recuperate is another new skill that allows you to gain health over time, even while in combat. The good thing about Recuperate, as well as Slice and Dice is that you can activate it with the unused combo points of a mob you just killed. Try to keep recuperate up as much as you can when leveling as at it will reduce your down time while leveling and slice and dice will increase your damage per second.

Make sure you use your cool downs when they are up but try to use them when they will be of most use though. An unused cool down is a wasted cooldown. Most of our cool downs do not take long to come back so do not be afraid to use them.

    5. Poisons - In PVE usually Deadly poison should always be on the offhand weapon and your main hand weapon should be instant poison or leeching poison. If you are an assassination rogue you will also want to use deadly poison on your thrown weapon if you are going to be making us of fan of knives. You will want to make sure you use fan of knives at least five times to make sure all the poison is stacked on all of the mobs to max. Now for PVP poison use is situation you may want to use crippling poison to slow you target now, wounding to keep them from healing as good or so forth, it depends a lot on what class you are facing.
